Vintage Ampex 401a Reel To Reel Magnetic Tape Recorder

I received a large amount of Ampex and other recording gear from the back room of an old recording studio that closed many years ago. Ampex 401A Reel To Reel Transport. I received this from the back room of a vintage recording studio that closed many years ago. There is no way of knowing when it was last used. It includes the 401A Transport only. There is no additional electronics that goes with it. Please see the 18 photos provided including the photos of the underside of the chassis. This is the same model that was made famous by Buddy Holly. He used one of these to record his “Apartment Tapes”. He did not use this exact unit, but the one he did use was a 401A. Very rare and hard to come by. Nothing has been tested. I did not even try to power it up. Looks like a good candidate for restoration. I hope you can use this in your project. All vintage electronics should be thoroughly checked by a qualified person before power and use. Ampex 1260 Vintage Portable Tube Reel-to-Reel Player Recorder (very nice)

This Ampex unit is in fantastic cosmetic condition with minimal wear, especially on the side. The faceplate really looks great! While we do deal with quite a bit of audio equipment, I’ve never been a tape guy. In fact, I don’t even have a tape to test this with. All I can tell you is that it powers up (albeit with a noisy fan), and both motors turn. Given it’s age and the fact that we can’t fully test it, there’s a decent chance it will need some level of service. Rest assured, you’ll receive your item on time and in excellent condition! OTARI MX-7300 8 channel reel to reel tape recording console MX-7308 ampex

Super rare OTARI MX-7308 8 channel reel to reel player. Thoroughly cleaned, overall pretty nice shape and functions/works. No major cosmetic damage, minor wear over the years as seen in photos. The cue switch seems a little bit goofy, but the tape lift levers work as they should. Also, one button cap is missing on the remote. Everything else is in-tact and seems to function as it should. Heads appear to be in really good shape, rubber rollers are in excellent shape and not dry. Everything appears to function. The unit weighs over 300lbs and can help dissemble and load. Ampex AG600 portable reel to reel analog tape recorder from late 1960s

Ampex AG 600 portable analog tape recorder for restoration. From the late 1960s / early 1970s era. Presents nicely, needs allot of cleaning and will gleam with TLC and polish. Minor blemishes, and oxidation in places. As found from an engineer’s estate. Indicator light powers on — Meter bounced nicely when EQ switched and volume pots turned.. I could not get the transport running and it got very warm. Fuse is OK.. Might be me, a dirty switch or maybe a motor starting cap. Needs cleaning and surely some adjustments and repairs to be in running condition. No other functions were inspected or tested. Includes only the extras shown in photo. Nice power cord, and what appears to be an low use or NOS 311 reel that is nearly full. This was the first solid-state product carrying forward the build quality of the old tube 600 machines.. Machines like these Ampex AG 600 and 600/601 tube series before allowed studio quality analog records to be made in the field— countless famous live recordings have been made with these. These days with digital — it’s amazing what you can do with a single, mono analog track. This might be just what you need for effects or analog presence in your next audio project. If you are looking for a good summer/fall project for either high quality preamp / tape playback or setting up a preamp or tape track in your home studio. This is a terrific score. The sound will be well worth the TLC you provide. Will be packed in strong, outer box with padding.
