I received a large amount of Ampex and other recording gear from the back room of an old recording studio that closed many years ago. Ampex 401A Reel To Reel Transport. I received this from the back room of a vintage recording studio that closed many years ago. There is no way of knowing when it was last used. It includes the 401A Transport only. There is no additional electronics that goes with it. Please see the 18 photos provided including the photos of the underside of the chassis. This is the same model that was made famous by Buddy Holly. He used one of these to record his “Apartment Tapes”. He did not use this exact unit, but the one he did use was a 401A. Very rare and hard to come by. Nothing has been tested. I did not even try to power it up. Looks like a good candidate for restoration. I hope you can use this in your project.
