Pioneer QT6600 Quadraphonic Reel to Reel Tape Recorder PARTS & REPAIR
This listing is for an interesting Pioneer QT-6600 auto reverse quad / stereo reel to reel tape recorder. First thing to get over is that I thought it was spelled quadrophonic. Pioneer disagree, so I’m going to stick with quad for this listing. Unlike the later Pioneer RT-1020L, this deck will record in quad format as well as playing back discrete quad / 4 channel tapes. There’s lots of info on this on hifiengine. Com, including a service manual. When I checked it out, the capstan engaged the pinch roller and rotated as it should in Play mode for a while, then stopped, although it would still rotate slowly in fast wind mode. Neither reel motor spins. The right one will not rotate by hand. The left will rotate easily by hand and showed the tape counter functions. Much of this sounds like a belt needs replacing, however I haven’t opened the deck any further than flipping up the head cover and nothing is guaranteed in that respect. The record-play mechanical interlock works as it should, except of course that tape does not move. I’ve checked out the electronics as far as possible, injecting 1kHz / 1V p-p into the channels in pairs and shown that the input and monitor circuits work as they should. See the photos of the line out on the scope for the front and rear channels. The input level and master level controls operate as they should. They would benefit from a squirt of contact cleaner of course. I haven’t been able to check out the electronics immediately to and from the play / record and erase heads.
