Renowned as workhorses, the Technics 1500 Series of reel-to-reel recorders are known for brushless quartz lock capstan motor of some 17cm in diameter, with a capstan of more than 3cm diameter driving two pinch rollers and the tape in a closed loop. A significant advantage of these recorders is that they can play back at 3.75, 7.5, and 15 ips. They also contain playback heads for both 1/2-track and 1/4-track recorded tapes, and can run 10.5 inch reels. This means they can play back most reels of 1/4 audiotape. This example was owned by the world renowned American Repertory Theater, at Harvard University’s Loeb Drama Center (see photo #10, of engraving), where it saw regular use over several decades. Signs of regular use in a professional setting are apparent; no damage, but visible wear and smudging on control surfaces.
